MrBeast says he turned down the chance to be on the doomed Titan submersible-

Last week saw one of the year’s biggest stories end in tragedy, when the search for OceanGate’s Titan submersible ended with confirmation it had imploded, killing all five people on board. OceanGate’s tourism business had the craft making repeated trips to the Titanic since 2021. But the incident prompted deeper investigation into the company, revealing how fast-and-loose it had been with safety.

One of the most surreal aspects of watching this event unfold was the repeated links people made to tech and gaming. Iron Lung, a horror game about being stuck in a submarine, became one of the points of comparison in the moment, with its creator remarking on Twitter “this feels wrong” as he saw sales for the game spike suddenly. There was chatter about Gabe Newell’s investment in a submarine, or the Logitech controller used to pilot the Titan, and then perhaps most bizarre of all the tragic outcome was first confirmed by a relative sharing a message from the presiden…

NYT Connections puzzle hint and answers for Wednesday, September 13 (#94)-

Narrow down today’s Connections in an instant—and do it in whatever way suits you best too. If you’re after a few hints to get you started you’ll find them just below, for every colour the game has going.

Need something a little stronger? You’re in luck. All the answers to the September 13 (#94) Connections puzzle are right here and ready to go.

Why would I solve Connections in the expected order when I could find today’s groups in reverse instead? For some reason the purple words in this set stood out a mile, while the easier yellow and green pairings didn’t make much sense until there was nothing else left.

NYT Connections hint today: Wednesday, September 13

Yellow: If you wanted to get rid of someone, and you didn’t really care how they felt on the way out, you might use one of these words to send them on their way. Rude, but effective.

Green: This is a group of short and simple words. You’d use these to iden…

Prototypes for a Lenovo handheld gaming console show up on sale in China-

Prototypes of an unreleased Lenovo handheld called Legion Play are being sold in China, showing what could have been a would-be rival to Logitech and Razer’s cloud gaming devices.

YouTuber Taki Udon (spotted by Tom’s Hardware) bought one of these prototypes and did an extensive hands-on with the rare unreleased handheld. Udon said he paid $160 for the unit on a second-hand market, and the seller told him that there were 1,000 models in “all different levels of quality,” but only 100 were in the condition you see in the video.

That’s not what it would’ve cost if it had officially made it to retail: For context, the Logitech G Cloud retails for $350, and the 5G-enabled Razer Edge will hit shelves at $399 later this month. Legion Play seems closer spec-wise to the G Cloud since both are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor and have a similar design.

The UI is what you’d expect from an Android device, and it includes a Tencent gaming app that lo…

‘$100M is GTA-level money’- A former developer on the 2013 Deadpool game says rumors of its budget are highly exaggerated-

A former developer who worked on the 2013 Deadpool action game says there’s no way it cost over $100M to make, despite long-standing rumors and even Wikipedia claiming otherwise.

“Not even close,” Chris Baker, a former developer who worked in Marvel’s games division at the time of Deadpool’s release, wrote on X of the rumored nine-figure budget. People insert this factoid into conversations about High Moon Studios’ game, but there’s actually no reliable source of that info. Wikipedia’s page for the most expensive games to develop cites a 2015 Gamespot listicle with no source either.

Baker took to X to dispute this claim after publishing a video retrospective of the Deadpool games he’s worked on over the years. “I wasn’t privy to the actual budget, but $100 million is GTA-level money, at least back then.” And he’s right: A 2008 Times profile of Leslie Benzies, a producer on Grand Theft Auto 4, quotes him estimating the budget to be around $100M.

The next Magic- The Gathering set features a monkey so strong, they told him he couldn’t play-

It’s officially spoiler season for Magic: the Gathering’s new set, March of the Machine, and we’ve already got some hitters. The set’s story features the last desperate struggle of the planeswalkers to turn back the tide of Elesh Norn and her infinite hordes of Phyrexian death robots. It also features a reprint of a very cheeky monkey.

That’s right, Ragavan is coming to Magic the Gathering: Arena. As this set represents the climactic battle of all planes to push back the Phyrexians, it isn’t set in one particular place but instead across the entire Magic multiverse. And since we know that everyone’s favorite pilferer is the strongest hero in all of Kaladesh, it makes sense that he would make an appearance. His arrival in the Historic format is sure to cause a major commotion, with most folks thinking he’ll be banned on arrival or shortly thereafter, like he is in Legacy.

Ragavan isn’t the only hero answering the call to battle, however. Every booster will include a Multi…

Starfield expansion Shattered Space is out September 30, but you can drive its new moon buggy today-

Watch On

Bethesda popped up at Gamescom Opening Night Live to reveal that the Rev-8, a vehicle for traversing Starfield’s giant planets in bumpy style, is “available tonight” for free. I gotta say I’m getting big Mass Effect Mako vibes from this thing, but in a charming way—it looks bouncy, seemingly has the ability to hover to help you clear large gaps, and yeah, of course it’s got a gun on it.

The bigger news, though, is that Starfield’s first expansion, Shattered Space, has a release date. As teased at the end of the trailer above, it’s out on September 30. You can read more about the surprise patch on Bethesda’s website, which includes details on a number of bug fixes and details how to get ahold of your own Rev-8 (okay, it’s pretty simple: just talk to your ship technician).

Today’s ground vehicle DLC release answers what may be Starfield’s most-requested feature. Almost immediately upon release last year, Todd Howard was fielding questions about why there wer…

While Dragon Age- The Veilguard’s companions will form their own relationships, it sounds like we’ll still be able to interfere with them- ‘They might come to you for advice, and I can’t guarantee you’ll give them good advice’

As per BioWare tradition, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will let you entangle yourself in hot, unprofessional workplace relationships with your colleagues at Veilguard Inc. The studio is also building on two lesser-discussed aspects of its previous games’ companion romances: They’ll be able to strike up relationships with each other, independent of the player, and, as hinted at in a recent Veilguard preview event, you’ll be able to help or hinder those budding dalliances.

“It felt right to also give them the opportunity to romance each other, and also romance other characters,” said John Epler, The Veilguard’s creative director. “We never want companions to feel like they exist just for Rook, just for the protagonist, they always should feel like real people.”

Corinne Busche, game director on The Veilguard, explained how this bolsters that “found family” fantasy BioWare companions have always been so good at evoking: “We’ve all been around that friend: They’ve fallen in lo…

Ubisoft reveals full Star Wars Outlaws system requirements and PC-specific features-

With two weeks to go before the arrival of Star Wars Outlaws—August 30 is the big day—Ubisoft has revealed the official PC system requirements, as well as a rundown of PC-specific features you’ll be able to take advantage of if you’ve got the hardware to handle it.

You’re going to need some pretty heavy hardware to run Star Wars Outlaws at its “ultra” setting, but it’s reasonably forgiving at the other end of the scale. Of course, one of the great things about PC gaming is that you can fiddle: Turn this up so you can turn that down, until you find a balance of eye-candy and performance that makes you happy—or, at the very least, that you can live with until you’re able to upgrade your rig.

The first Elden Ring- Shadow of the Erdtree patch nerfs the boss-melting explosive perfumes into the ground-

FromSoftware’s major Elden Ring expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, has arrived to a rapturous reception: including the highest score PC Gamer’s ever given a piece of DLC (sorry, Geralt). There have been a few unforeseen issues, of course, prime among which was the deadliest bottle of perfume ever known, capable of absolutely melting through Erdtree’s fearsome bosses.

The culprit was the Lightning Perfume Bottle’s standard moveset, which creates a series of individual explosions: combining this with the Rolling Sparks Ash of War and aiming at the ground had the unintended effect of making every explosion detonate instantly and on top of one another, resulting in unholy damage numbers that could obliterate the final boss in 13 seconds. This also worked with the Frenzyflame perfume bottle. Well FromSoftware nose what you’ve all been up to, and today’s new patch nerfs that sweet smell of success into the ground.

After the patch, aiming the perfume combo a…

With the necromancer, Vermintide 2 is getting a pet class at last-

Fatshark said it would continue to support Vermintide 2 after the launch of Darktide and has done just that, with additions like new free levels and remastered levels from the original Vermintide. Next up, pyromancer Sienna will finally get her fourth career: the necromancer.

Each of Vermintide’s other heroes has had a fourth career added as DLC, with Kruber getting the option to become a grail knight, Bardin an engineer, Kerillian a Sister of the Thorn, and Saltzpyre a warrior Priest. We’ve been waiting a while for Sienna to receive a similar treatment, and design director Joakim Setterberg explained why in a recent dev blog. “Looking at the career designs it was clear that the Necromancer would be the most complex class of the bunch,” he wrote, “and that it made most sense for it to go out last”

What makes necromancer Sienna so complex is that she can summon skeletal minions with her career skill, Raise Dead. “Sienna’s skeletons are actually rather like a friendly fact…

We’ll have to wait a bit longer for those hot new AMD gaming CPUs-

Update: Remember that launch date for AMD’s new 3D V-Cache powered Ryzen 7000 X3D processors has popped up on its own website we mentioned yesterday? The February 14 one? Turns out it was a mistake and it’s been removed from AMD’s website.

According to WCCFTech, the chips will still launch next month, but not on the 14th. That implies a launch later in the month. But the date has certainly been removed from AMD’s website.

We also still don’t know exactly how large a ransom you’ll have to pay for the benefit of the 3D-stacked cache memory. Currently, the Ryzen 9 7950X goes for around $570 and the 5900X for roughly $460. The X3D versions of those chips will obviously be more than that, but quite how much more isn’t clear.

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D, meanwhile, doesn’t have a direct equivalent non-X3D variant. The nearest AMD sells is the $350 Ryzen 7 7700X. Incidentally, the 5800X3D also lacks an official base clock, with just the 5GHz Turbo speed listed fo…

I wasn’t short of clues today, but one particular yellow letter really caused me some trouble. We might be getting another Diablo 4 beta soon-

Update: We are.

Original story: Don’t hold your breath, but there’s a chance we might be returning to Sanctuary a little earlier than we thought. A new tweet from the official Diablo account has sparked hope of another Diablo 4 beta incoming before its full release on June 6.

I say don’t hold your breath because the tweet is rather vague and could mean a few different things. The account was responding to a tweet earlier this month, where a user said “Need more Diablo 4 game time having withdrawal.” In a quote tweet, the Diablo account responded “That can be arranged…”

Diablo’s community development director Adam Fletcher responded with my favourite mischievous side-eye GIF, and even Blizzard president Mike Ybarra got in on the suspicious tweet replies. It’s got fans awfully riled up, with many asking if it’s going to be a second open beta or even possibly a surprise early release. I’d hedge my bets that the former is a …

I was certain my next guess was going to be a winner three times today, although the first two of those turned out to be wrong in different ways. That was a fun game, though it felt like I was following a trail of letter-shaped breadcrumbs to the answer, even if it did end up longer than I would have liked it to be.
